Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson on Nov 13, 1955 in New York City.  She has acted in major motion picture hits like Ghost, Sister Act I and II, Made in America, Jumping Jack Flash, The Color Purple, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. When Whoopi was growing up, she remembers being called dumb and stupid because she had a lot of problems reading. It was clear to her teachers and family that she was neither slow nor dumb, but had some problem that had not yet been well defined. Whoopi had a lot of difficulty in school, but it was not until she was an adult that she learned she had dyslexia. Despite her disability Whoopi Goldberg has gone on to have a very successful film and television career. She is one of only 13

people to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Not too bad for someone with a learning disability. Let's apply some basic astrology, the kind we teach here at Kissing Astrology, to this horoscope and see if it will reveal the person that we know as Whoopi Goldberg. We will examine her rising sign, ruling planet, Sun, Moon and their aspects. Just light, simple astrology. With Aquarius rising and her ruling planet (Uranus) in the sixth house of work and service, Whoopi was born to be a unique, one of a kind lady with a strong desire to get to work and be of service. With Aquarius rising Whoopi appears to be an original, independent and unique individualist. She will march to her own beat and will have a tendency to lean toward the arts, sciences, literature and distinctly humanitarian causes. Surprisingly determined, she will resist censorship, could be perceived as being intelligent and in many ways can seem to be ahead of her contemporaries. With her ruling planet involved in a tense square aspect from Neptune, she may give the appearances of being a bit odd or eccentric. With Uranus in the sixth house and trine the midheaven, she is not afraid to break new ground in her career choices.  What is considerd to be normal has little appeal to her but unique, independent and one a kind is the sound that fills her heart. With Uranus in Leo it is no big surprise that she seeks the limelight and has chosen entertainment as her profession. With Venus conjunct the midheaven the arts or some form of counseling are strong career choices. She once said, " I'm an artist; art has no color and no sex." Uranus in the sixth is also common in the horoscopes of those who will choose revolutionary, ground breaking techniques in health care and often have unique pets and clothing. Mercury (the senses) square Uranus probably helped contribute to her dyslexia.
 
I also see that her rising sign and ruling planet are both in fixed signs. So are her Sun and Moon. Non wavering, determined and possibly more than a bit stubborn have to be hallmarks of Whoopi Goldberg. I think once she makes a decision not much is going to change her mind. In addition, the Sun and Moon are up in the ninth house indicating that she was also born with a thirst for knowledge. Religion, higher education, knowledge, wisdom, long distance travel and foreign cultures are all areas that should fascinate her. Saturn is conjunct her Sun and square the ascendant so we must also add a bit of ambition to this horoscope. In addition, the Sun is also square Jupiter giving her a natural sense of humor. I see a real dichotomy here. Her most basic nature is very responsible, serious, sober and ambitious due to the conjunction with Saturn. Very self protective, her ego and will stay within self imposed limits. She has her share of fears and will learn the hard way, early in life, to avoid taking risks. Disciplined, ambitious and determined, she will achieve success and her need for security by hard work, a bit of sacrifice and by making the correct, responsible decisions.  But with her Sun square Jupiter we must also say that i inner tensions will cause her most basic self to constantly want to overdo things. While she can be very nice, generous and funny, she also possess an enormous ego and must fight becoming too self-indulgent.  Another bad habit from the Sun square Jupiter is that she shouldn't promise more than she can realistically get done.  She wants to be a responsible, determined and pragmatic person with her Saturn but that Sun Jupiter square keeps throwing her off to do big things in a more humorous, self-indulgent and "try's too hard" manner. This causes difficulty's. I think she said it best when she said, "If there wasn't something called acting they would probably hospitalize people like me. The giddiness and the joy of life is the moving and grooving, the exploration." Jupiter (joy and giddy) gets her out of her self protective (Saturn) shell.

Both the Sun and Moon are in Scorpio and the ninth house. Scorpio is the sign of power and control. Add a little ambition from her Sun Saturn conjunction and I think Whoopi is a complex and determined person with a strong, ambitious  personality that will eventually take control of any situation that she is a part of.   Whoopi wants to be in control and will not tolerate others attempting to dominate her. That is just not going to happen. A young Whoopi Goldberg will experience life and learn early to become a master of the use of power and control. In addition, she has strong executive abilities and, as she gains experience, will gravitate to positions of power. Whoopi Goldberg is a strong person who probably has little time for or respect for those who aren't. In addition, the Sun and Moon are in the ninth house. I think it is interesting that her mother (The Moon) was a teacher and her father (The Sun) was a preacher - both ninth house concepts. So what do we have here? An artistic, ambitious and independent person with a unique look and outlook, who is an executive type with a thirst for knowledge, power and control. Sounds like a recipe for success to me. I don't think it would be a very good idea to underestimate Whoopi Goldberg. But how did she get that strange name? Her original stage name was Whoopi Cushion. She said that people told her she was like a whoopee cushion. They must have seen her Sun Jupiter square. She simply thought, "If you get a little gassy, you've got to let it go" and she wasn't the least bit afraid to "let it go."  She then added the surname "Goldberg" after Jewish ancestors of hers who bore the name. She once said that "Goldberg is a part of my family somewhere."  With the Sun, Moon and Saturn all square the horizon along with her controlling nature, it is no great surprise that Whoopi has been married three times and had more that a few major relationships. Jupiter in the seventh house square the Sun always overdoes things. However a strong seventh also seems to be an important requirement for popularity as a strong seventh house is normal in the horoscopes of those in the public eye. It tends to add to their public appeal.

Now, what does the future hold for Ms. Whoopi Goldberg?  A lot. Jupiter is about to enter her twelfth house where t he meaning of life, compassion, empathy, peace, spiritual truth and universal laws will all be contemplated by her for the next year. Considerable insight can be achieved in the spiritual, religious and metaphysical areas of life. Jupiter tends to be very protective against major problems when transiting the twelfth house. But the big news is the position of her transiting Saturn. At 19 degrees Virgo it is transiting her 7th house of partners and has just began a major seven year cycle that astrologer Grant Lewi called "Public Rise." This is a period of time when one is rising in life, culminating in major accomplishments when Saturn reaches the midheaven. Wow! This climb up the ladder of success begins as she is already rich and famous having won every award possible in her industry.
