There is nothing mysterious or Godlike about the planets. They have no powers. Nor do they have the ability to cause anything to happen. In essence the planets are just very large rocks that happen to be orbiting the Sun.  What is significant about the planets is how we react to them. When our ancestors observed the night sky they noticed that some of the stars were moving. They called these wandering stars the planets. They are, in order from the Sun - Mercury, Venus

In Kissing Astrology we examine the Sun, Moon and Planets in three separate stages. Each stage deepens our understanding of their essential natures.   Above was my students very first look at the Sun.  Below you will find a very brief, generic outline of the most basic nature of the Sun, Moon and Planets to give you a beginners understanding of what they represent in a horoscope.

I want you to realize that what you see above is less than the tip of the proverbial iceberg as entire books have been written about each individual planet. Once you have learned about the Sun, Moon and Planets it is time to discover aspects. An aspect occurs when the celestial bodies are certain distances apart. When they are aspecting each other they form a relationship that modifies their essential meaning. The five primary aspects are:

A conjunction occurs when two planets are occupying the same space in a horoscope.  A sextile is in effect when two planets are 60 degrees apart.  A square aspect is in effect when two planets are 90 degrees apart. A trine aspect is in effect when two planets are 120 degrees apart. An opposition occurs when two planets are 180 degrees apart or exactly opposite each other in a horoscope.  A conjunction is an aspect of power.  Sextile's and trines are considered to be positive and harmonious aspects but are not very strong.  They indicate a harmonious flow of energies between the planets in aspect.  Opposition and square aspects are stronger and are generally considered to be more stressful and problematic. They indicate frustrations and difficulties between the planets involved.
