teams won several championships in open wheel Indy Car racing. He served his country with honors as a tail gunner in World War II and co-founded Newman's Own, a food company from which Newman donated all profits and royalties to charity. As of May 2007, these donations had exceeded a quarter of a billion dollars. On September 26, 2008, Paul Newman died at his long-time home in Westport, Connecticut, of complications arising from cancer. This week I want to examine the horoscope of Paul Newman in our infamous Keep It Simple Student manner. I want to demonstrate that astrology can easily indicate the essential characteristics of a man whose life was so well known by so very many.
With Capricorn rising, Mercury conjunct the ascendant, the ruling planet in the 10th house of ones aim in life, the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Pisces, Paul Newman was born a progressive thinking humanitarian (Sun in Aquarius) with the compassion, intuition and soul of an artist. (The Moon in Pisces along with Venus conjunct the ascendent) His Capricorn ascendant and ruling planet (Saturn) in the 10th house gave him the appearance of being well grounded, hard working and responsible (Capricorn rising) with a powerful inner need to do his best and strive to achieve some degree of status, respect and authority. (Saturn in the 10th house) He thought in practical, down to earth terms (Mercury in Capricorn) about humanitarian and artistic ideals. (His Aquarius Sun and Pisces Moon) Paul Newman once said,
"
I'd like to be remembered as a guy who tried ...
(Capricorn rising, ruler in the tenth)
tried to be part of his times, (Saturn) tried to help people communicate with one another,
(Mercury conjunct the ascendent)
tried to find some decency in his own life,
(Mercury conjunct the ascendant indicates both the desire to communicate and
an inquiring mind geared toward intellectual self-awareness
)
and tried to extend himself as a human being.
(Sun in the first house)
Someone who isn't complacent,
(Aquarius)
who doesn't cop out."
(Saturn-the planet of responsibility)
That statement is a text book description of his rising sign, Sun, Moon and ruling planet. The Sun, rising sign and ruling planet are always the key ingredients that compose ones most basic personality. They will vividly describe the heart and soul of every horoscope you will ever read. It is simply astounding to me that astrology can so easily express the essential nature of a person. I am reminded of the words of Carl Jung, one of the founding fathers of psychology, when he said,
"Since you want to know my opinion of astrology I can tell you that I have been interested in this particular activity of the humane mind since more than thirty years. As a psychologist I am chiefly interested in the particular light the horoscope sheds on certain complications in the character. In cases of difficult psychological diagnosis I usually get a horoscope in order to have a further point of view from an entirely different angle. I must say that I very often found that the astrological data elucidated certain points which I otherwise would have been unable to understand."
Never forget that the rising sign, ruling planet and Sun and Moon are well known as the astrological keys to ones basic personality. Together they represent ones heart and soul.
We could easily go on with this horoscope in more detail. For example, Saturn in the 10th house is taught in our class as,
"Saturn in the 10th is a powerful and beneficial placement. You are a very ambitious person who desires the recognition and success that accompanies hard work. You were born with good organizational abilities and strong executive skills. Your sense of security is directly related to your occupational success indicating a person driven to achieve. Hard work and discipline will insure your eventual success."
And it did. To the ruler of the first in the 10th we could add, "
You are very interested in your aim in life, achievements and status. Your honor and reputation are primary concerns and you will gravitate to situations where you can assume the role of the authority figure."
That is exactly what Paul Newman was all about. The desire to achieve and to act in an honorable and reputable manner.
He had executive and organizational skills and established a thriving business in the food industry. The Moon in the second house is just one indicator of income from food but he went further. He gave all the after tax profits away to charity. Over $225,000,000.00 so far. Paul Newman was a true philanthropist giving away huge sums of money to people and causes that needed it. He once said,
"
I don't think there's anything exceptional or noble in being philanthropic. It's the other attitude that confuses me."
(The Moon in Pisces) Paul Newman was a good and noble man. But where did all this compassion and philanthropy come from? His second house Pisces Moon is one place. The other is his 12th house Jupiter. There is no more charitable sign or house than Pisces or the 12th house and the second house is all about ones money and sense of self worth. So, we have a hard working, status seeking, authority figure on our hands with executive skills and the desire to act in an honorable and reputable manner. In addition, we have a Moon in Pisces in the second house along with Jupiter in the 12th which is the very signature of philanthropy. It all fits just so easily.
But what about his love of sports car racing? Where in his horoscope is that? Please. Even the newest student of our art can't help but look at Mars in Aries and the third house of short distance travels and ones means of transportation. All that energy, aggression and assertive action in the sign of Aries, a
"go now in a bold and courageous manner"
sign and applying its energy to the section of every horoscope having to do with routine travel and ones means of transportation is just too easy. People with Mars in the third often drive too fast and are more than prone to speeding tickets. But Newman wasn't a usual person. He lived his horoscope by the rules (Capricorn) and to the fullest. He was born with the itch to drive very fast and he satisfied it by driving in a competitive and responsible manner, and he won. In fact, Paul Newman is in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest winning race car driver ever. This comes from one of his victory's at the age of 70.
Paul Newman
Born January 26, 1925 at 6:30 AM in
Cleveland, Ohio
Paul Newman was an exceptional man. He was a hard working, talented individual who was driven to succeed in an honorable, dignified, and responsible manner. He had a great sense of humor but always kept everything in perspective. (All that Saturn and Capricorn) I love to point out that the horoscopes of celebrity's are very easy to read. This is because they live their horoscopes to the fullest and Paul Newman was no exception. From the many blessings and honors bestowed by a hard working Saturn up in the tenth house of honor, status, reputation and ones aim in life, to the pains and sorrows of the ruler of his fifth house of children in a torturous opposition aspect to Pluto heralding the loss of a child, Paul Newman explored and experienced every breath of his horoscope. He was so much more than just a blue eyed actor. He was an inspiration to do your best both for yourself and for the common good. Early in this article we quoted him as saying,
"I'd like to be remembered as a guy who tried.... tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn't complacent, who doesn't cop out".
Paul Newman was all that and more. Simply put, the world is a better place because he was here. What more legacy can one ask? Because all the profits from Newmans Own go to charity, I intend to make it a point to check out the Newman's Own brand the next time I go shopping. It's the kind of win win situation that I would hope we would all like to involve ourselves.
